David and Doreen Dotson started cartooning together shortly after they were married in 1990. Their first strip was Sport Barbs, a sports oriented cartoon strip. They later went on to create Jonah's Journey, and Outzkirts. Outzkirts became an instant success and has been running since 2000. It was first seen in the East County of San Diego and it is now nation wide from California to North Carolina. David writes the story lines and gags, and Doreen draws them out. In their words, "It's been a perfect partnership." David and Doreen have three children and presently live in the  Southern California area. They are currently members of the Southern California Cartoonist Society.

The comic strip contains a whale hidden somewhere in every feature. Outzkirts subscribers have used it as a marketing tool to generate interest in the comic strip and their paper, with "find the whale contests".

Bud and Edna were on their "float" in the Pine Valley Days Parade. Afterwards a lady chased down the float screaming, "Outzkirts stop!" It turns out that it wasn't an emergency. She said that she just had to get one of the Outzkirts t-shirts for her daughter who was a big fan.

Bud and Edna have been seen and enjoyed by their fans in the Lakeside, the Pine Valley days, and the Cattle Call parades.

David Dotson portrays Bud in parades and public appearances while Lois Dotson, David's mother, portrays Edna.
